We are living in a word of technology where people can find computers everywhere. In our pockets (as cellphones), in cars, on hands as watches, in our houses and so on.
Does it ever cross your mind to ask yourself how a computer works, what makes it to be a computer? In this blog post, I am going to take you through in a big picture to make you understand how it works.
As humans, we always want to improve, inventing tools to make life easier, to help us with some complex calculations.
Then come a time when people started thinking if they can make a machine that can do the THINKING WORK, like:
- Making calculations,
- Solving equations
- Tracking stocks in the stores, or the sky …
Instead of moving and manipulating hard things or physical, those machines would need to manipulate information (calculations at that time).
The pioneers of computer science or inventors of that thinking machine realized that the machine had to perform four (4) operations or tasks:
- INPUT information
- STORE information
- PROCESSING information
- OUTPUT information
Those four operations (tasks) are the foundation and summary of what we call today computer. In addition, any computer must be able to do these four tasks, it is the most common point for all computers. That what makes a computer to be a computer. The earlier computers were made of woods and metals, with mechanical levers and gears. Huge like the size of the house.
By the 20th century, computers started using electrical components but they were really large and slow. Computers started as calculators.
However, today we can talk to each other, play games and do all crazy staffs with computers. Behind the scene, computers are doing the same tasks: Input, Storage, Processing, and Output.
Let us go through those four tasks:
It is a way of putting information into a computer so that it can be stored in the memory. We can use various way to input information in the computer.
- By keyboard like typing text
- Microphone to record
- Camera to capture images or videos that a car’s computer can use for movement detection and so one …
STORAGE & PROCESSING
All inputs give computer information to be stored in memory. A computer processor takes information from the memory, it manipulates it or changes it using an algorithm (series of instructions) and then sends back to be stored in memory again. This continues until the processes information is ready to be output.
Is when information that is processed or manipulated by the PROCESSOR is sent out from a machine or another electronic device. It is anything viewed on your computer’s monitor or screen, such as the words you type on your keyboard.
How computer outputs information depends on what the computer is designed to do.
- A computer display can show text, photos, videos, or interactive games even virtual reality
- The output of a computer may even include signals to control a robot
- When computers connect over the internet, the output from a computer can become input from another computer and vice versa.
In conclusion, despite the different versions of the computer, it is still perform four tasks: Input, Storage, Processing (CPU or Central Processor Unit), and Output information.
