From our last publications, if you are following along, we went from How a computer works to The measurement of data. It is a brief introduction to the field of computer science or information technology. In the computer world, everything is “data”. From messages, phone calls, videos, pictures, documents, and so on, are all “data”. We send data or shared it from a device to another using the internet. Therefore, in this article, we are going to learn more about the internet that we use in our daily life.
What is the Internet by the way? If you can take a minute to think about it or ask the people around you, the answers will be surprising.
By definition, according to Wikipedia, The Internet is the publicly available worldwide system of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by packet switching over the Internet Protocol (IP). It is made up of thousands of other, smaller business, academic, and government networks. … The Internet is a global data communications system.
Who invented it?
It is like asking people about who invented the flushing toilet (invented by SIR JOHN HARRINGTON at 1596), or who invented Ballpoint pen (invented by JOHN J. LOUD at 1888). People do not mind and do not even think that things there are using was one day been invented by someone.
VINT CERF and BOB KAHN invented the internet in 1970; it was the result of another project called ARPANET, which stands for Advanced Research Projects Agency Network, which was the USA Defense Department research project. Under ARPANET, PAUL BARAN was trying to make a communication system from a Centralized Network to Distributed Network that may survive a nuclear attack.
Let us see the difference between centralized and distributed network systems.
- A centralized computer is computing done at a central location, using terminals that are attached to a central computer. The computer itself may control all the peripherals directly (if they are physically connected to the central computer), or they may be attached via a terminal server. Alternatively, if the terminals have the capability, they may be able to connect to the central computer over the network, if the central computer is compromised, all computers that connected will be down as well.
- Distributed Network used in distributed computing, is the network system over which computer programming, software, and its data are spread out across more than one computer, but communicate complex messages through their nodes (computers), and are dependent upon each other. The goal of a distributed network is to share resources, typically to accomplish a single or similar goal.
By creating a Distributed network, they decided to spread up messages to the blocks and sending them fast to every possible direction to the dimensional network through a distributed packet-switched network.
The pioneers of internet VINT CERF and BOB KAHN based on ARPANET, who was just for the USA Defense Department and Universities; they created a national worldwide shearing network that interconnects computers or devices to each other who is the internet.
The internet is made up of independently operated networks. There is no central control, and what is very interested in the system is that it is fully distributed. How data has to transit from point A to reach point B depend entirely on the system independent build in decisions but they all assured that there is an end to end connectivity to every part on the internet so that any device can communicate to any other device.
The idea behind is that knowledge you have may be useful to anybody else or vice versa, and it is a very powerful motivator for sharing information. Science itself is made of that idea, of sharing information. By the way, people start thinking on this way to build applications, software that uses the internet to connect people and sharing resources, that why we have the World Wide Web (WWW), video conferences, electronic mails who are services used upon the internet.
In conclusion, We have learned about the internet who is a network system created under a distributed system in order to share information. The Internet was created in 1970 and no one can escape it. Everyone is using a computer device that needs to communicate with another device in a different location. The Internet carries a vast range of information resources and services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents and applications of the World Wide Web (WWW), electronic mail, telephony, and file sharing. In addition, all that information is just a “data” that is transported as binary, 0’s, and 1’s.
